Fall Movie Preview.

Here are my three movie that I predict are gonna be excellent this Fall.
First off we have Lars Von Trier's new movie, Melancholia. Starring the likes of Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Kiefer Sutherland. A story of two sisters who face additional strife between each other as an unknown planet threatens to collide in to earth. This is going to be amazing!

Next up is Martha Marcy May Marlene. Elizabeth Olsen stars in this physiological thriller as Martha, a young woman trying to re-assimilate back in to society after escaping an abusive cult-like setting. Elizabeth Olsen's performance looks entirely promising.

If you're not tearing up after watching even just the trailer, then there is something wrong with you. This one is called, Like Crazy, starring Felicity Jones & Anton Yelchin. Young love is cut off when Felicity Jones is sent back to the UK after violating the terms of her visa. Adding distance between an already blooming relationship can't be a good thing. Cool fact about this one is that it was filmed without a script, so I bet the conversation and interaction has a natural believability to it.

Star Slinger - Dumbin ' feat. Reggie B.

I always tell people that Star Slinger is my favorite, and I am hoping to catch his show up in LA on the 7th at the Troubadour. You may not know this but Star Slinger just signed on to Mountain Dew’s Green Label Sound along side other heavy hitters in the game such as Chromeo, Theophilus London, and Neon Indian. He just dropped his first single since signing on with GLS called "Dumbin'" in which he samples Reggie B. Its great.

Neon Indian & Com Truise Show @ Belly Up.

Charles Bergquist snapped some amazing shots from last night's Neon Indian & Com Truise show at Belly Up Tavern here in San Diego. Check 'em out!

Elite Gymnastics.

Minneapolis natives James & Josh, comprise Elite Gymnastics. They are a couple of dope dudes, who make dope music. I love their samples, such as their Waka Flocka remix, but I also like the ones that are purely them. I think you need to keep an eye out for these dudes, they're about to blow up.

Com Truise - Broken Date.

New video for Com Truise's 1980's warped-electro song "Broken Date". I really love it, you gotta try it.

Frank Ocean - Swim Good.

First time I watched this video last week, I wasn't a fan of it. Today I watched it again and I can't even remember why I didn't like it! Frank Ocean's whole discography is a must have for any iTunes Library. "Swim Good" is blowin' up right now too; with this amazing new video directed by Nabil Elderkin, and also there is a live video of Eliza Doolittle covering it. Love me some Frank Ocean.

Dum Dum Girls - Bedroom Eyes.

I'll be first to say, I love girl bands. The more brutal the better. Dum Dum Girls have been a favorite of mine for a while, and though they've made some changes over time, I still love them. Here is the new video for their song "Bedroom Eyes". Do your thang gurlz, I ain't even mad.

::M∆DE:IN:HEIGHTS::

::M∆DE:IN:HEIGHTS:: keeps poppin' up all over the blogosphere and so its about time that I gave them a little shout out. They've got super sugary vocals, with killer beats, my favorite combination. Shoots brah, check out their Sufjan Stevens sample below, as well as a couple of the tracks off of their latest album, APORIA: IN THESE §TREETS, which you can grab over at their bandcamp (name your price).

Washed Out - Amor Fati.

Washed Out just debuted the new video for Amor Fati directed by Yoonha Park. The video tells the story of a young vagabond boy and his wanderings. I wouldn't expect anything less from Washed Out, simply perfect. Check it out!

Music Submission: Silent Rider.

Brooklyn based downtempo-dubstep duo Reed Kackley and Michael Santiago make up the latest music submission, Silent Rider. We have been doing some emailing back and forth about getting a submission post going, and today is the day. Here is a quick bio from these two rad dudes:

"We began working together a few years back (2007-ish) in college down in central Virginia. Initially we were writing 80's Synth Pop/Parisian Electro, but were sick of the project before we had even put together an EP. As a result, we took time off from writing music for about a year and then began working on new material in the summer of 2010. Since then, we have compiled enough material for a full-length album. It ranges from dark, ambient, dubstep-influenced tracks to more upbeat electronic-pop. Eventually, we would like to shed some of the electronic aspects of our sound and move toward a more organic sound like that of Bonobo or Radiohead. Presently, we are living in Brooklyn, NY and putting together a 5/6-piece live band."

After listening to their tracks, I can feel the Radiohead influence as well of some hints of MGMT, at least vocally. I was super stoked to see that they had a cover of TV on the Radio's song "DLZ", it is definitely a refreshing new take on an old favorite. Check them out on their Facebook page, Twitter, or Soundcloud, you won't regret it. Thanks guys!

You Won't - Television.

I love this song that Nada of Friends With Both Arms featured today. The song is "Television" by You Won't. It is so simple and done so right. I just want to clap along to these catchy vocals all Autumn long. Is it weird that it makes me want to listen while camping around a bonfire? maybe.

 You Won't - Television

SBTRKT - Pharaohs ft. Roses Gabor.

SBTRKT has been one of my favorites lately, going along with the Disco Era inspired electronic tracks which have been popping up everywhere these days. SBTRKT just debuted the music video for "Pharaohs" earlier this month, highlighting Roses Gabor who supplied the vocals for the song. This song makes me want to quit everything and pursue my dancing career, just kidding, but seriously.

Music Submission: And the Giraffe.

Nick Roberts and Josh Morris of And the Giraffe contacted me earlier this week originally to submit music for Kelsey and Kristen of Six Penny Globe, and now to get their amazing music featured here on For Evan, Forever Ago. I think you guys will really like these guys!

And the Giraffe consists of two best friends, Nick and Josh. They are Gainsville, Florida natives and they just released their new EP titled Something for Someone. This dream-folk Ep has six songs, all of which are serene, peaceful, relatively ambient, and should belong in your iTunes library, like now. My personal favorites are "Underground Love" and "Masquerade", because they are so soft and pleasant, and the melancholy vocals have hints of optimism throughout the lines. The EP is available on their bandcamp and they have the "name your price" offer going, which is nice, but hey, these guys need some support!
Before you go out and buy their EP, have a listen:

SebastiAn ft. Mayer Hawthorne - Love In Motion (Skrillex's Funkt-Out Mix).

Of course Skrillex took an already perfect song like "Love In Motion" by SebastiAn & Mayer Hawthorne, and made it completely his own! Chop it, screw it, add a dirty dubstep bassline, and you're ready to go. Surprisingly the soulful qualities of the original remain even after Sonny Moore got his hands on it. Currently bumping in my speakerz.

Rustie - All Nite.

Soulful-glitch DJ, Rustie, has provided us with an amazing weekend anthem! He has been on the scene for years, but his new album Glass Swords will be out on October 11th! I am so excited for it to release, it is going to be magnificent. This song, All Nite, is on the album with 12 other songs that are sure to blow our mindz.

CSS - Hits Me Like A Rock.

Here is a song that I have officially played a million times this week. Hits Me Like a Rock is off of the new CSS album La Liberación which was released on August 22nd. La Liberación is Brazilian band CSS's third studio album. A random fact that I just read about how they got their name, is that it came from a Beyoncé quote in which she reportedly said that she was "tired of being sexy". CSS is an abbreviation for Cansei de Ser Sexy, literally "got tired of being sexy" in Portuguese. How funny is that? I had no idea.

GIRLS - Honey Bunny.

The SF surf-rock boys from one of my favorite bands, GIRLS, just released the new video for their song, Honey Bunny, off of the new Father, Son, Holy Ghost album which dropped on September 13th. This song was featured on my Back To School Mixtape, so it is nice to finally have some visuals for it. Christopher Owens (Chri55y Baby) is shown rockin' some black velvet, a deathly hallows necklace, and at times the infamous GIRLS denim jacket, all while driving around the bay area in a stolen convertible looking for 'girls'. Such a cute story, its good to see a music video from them that actually shows mainly them, instead of just an array of all their friends. Congrats to the boys of GIRLS.

Band To Watch: Slow Club.

The last time this folk-rock duo from Sheffield, England released anything was their Yeah So album back in 2009. But lucky for us their latest album, Paradise, just release on the 12th of this month, and it has been getting some rave reviews! Rolling Stone even featured Slow Club as their "band to watch" for this month, giving the new album a rating of 3.5 stars. I personally can't get enough of Rebecca Taylor's voice in their new single, Two Cousins. Give it a listen below and tell me your thoughts!

 Slow Club - Two Cousins

Frank Ocean - Thinking About You.

I have been going through a huge Frank Ocean phase lately, to that point that an hour ago I was cooped up in the school Library studying my butt off while listening to all of his songs. Then I got home and stumble on the new official video for my favorite song by him, Thinking About You, directed by High 5 Collective. From what I took from it, its a conceptual video about literally sharing your life with loved ones? I don't know, what do you guys think about this video? I think I need to watch it a few more times, because all I know right now is that the imagery was beautiful, for sure, but I don't necessarily know what it means. Thoughts?

BLEACHED - Think Of You.

By far one of the coolest music videos that I've seen in a long time. This is the video for song "Think of You" by Bleached directed by Lana Kim & Jennifer Clavin. They've got vintage rocker attitudes combined with cool cars, cool haircuts, and some underwater action, so the imagery can't be beat. Plus the song itself is that Distorted-California-Summer-Rock that I just can't get enough of.  I want to be them. For real though. Get watchin' y'all.

The Kooks Free Show!

Just got back from seeing The Kooks put on a fun little set for FREE at Bird's Surf Shed here in San Diego! They played a short & sweet set including the song "Rosie", "Eskimo Kiss", "Junk Of The Heart", and our old favorite "Ooh La"! The radio station 94.9 helped put on this little set to help promote The Kooks' new album Junk Of The Heart which came out on September 12th of this year! It was a fun show, super hot inside, with not much room to stand, but everyone was super excited for the guys to go on! When they finally took the stage everyone was howlin' for some good jams, and boy did we get them. All together I left satisfied with their heavily acoustic live versions, quality poppy vocals, and audience-charming charisma. Check out their new album, its a good one!

Also here is their new video for the single and title track off of Junk Of The Heart.

Dirty Gold via Charles Berguist.

Here are some amazing photos and a rad video clip shot by Charles Bergquist of our favorite up-and-comers, Dirty Gold. Good work!

Lovedrug - Dinosaur.

How great is this video for Lovedrug's song Dinosaur. It follows a group of hoodrat trendy girls as they ride bikes, hit mailboxes, break trees, shoot roman candles, and get followed by a masked big-foot / abominable-snowman boy. Thats an award winning combination.

Lily Allen - 5 O'clock (feat. T-Pain & Wiz Khalifa)

Well isn't this a strange collaboration that actually works pretty well? I'm a big Lily Allen fan and when I heard about this song I just had to go check it out and to my surprise I was in to it! What do you guys think? Too much auto-tune?

Diamond Rings - You & Me.

Hey did you know that Diamond Rings has a new music video for their song You & Me? Now you do! Its a cute one, about these two kids who help each other escape some bullies, then they dance around a fire with monsters. Sounds fun, right? I think so too.

Future Islands - Balance.

This is the video for Future Island's song Balance directed by Jay Buim. I've been doing a lot of thinking lately about youth culture, and which subcultures are positive representations of the whole. So far I am thinking that those with an internal fire for adventure and freedom are the ones who are doing it right. This video shows a young couple hitchhiking around finding adventure, and it is beautiful.

Tangents & The Times: The Series (Episode 3).

Marissa A. Ross, the hilarious woman behind Tangents & The Times, one of my biggest blog crushes, just release episode 3 of her web series about her life. This episode has plenty of dudefriend issues, struggling to make it in the LA "it" scene, and her cute dog Zissou. Oh and plenty of drinking...check it out:

Florence + The Machine - Shake It Out.

WOW WOW WOW! Brand new single released today from Florence + The Machine called Shake it Out. It is the first single off of the upcoming album Ceremonials due out November 1st. It is an epic one for sure, with powerful layers of vocals and their iconic heavy drums. But thats not all, they also released the album artwork and the full tracklist all at once! how crazy is that? well I sure am glad that they did. Start listening!

Florence and the Machine - Shake it Out

Music Submission: JEANE.

I am very excited with this music submission that I got yesterday from Dylan of NYC based band, JEANE. Dylan Treleven is the bassist in the band Oberhofer, which you might recall the post I did not too long ago about their new single, Gotta Go. Well Jeane is one of his new projects in which he produces and plays keyboard in, and they have a new EP called "Hidden House". Since it was recorded in the Summer of 2011 in New York City, you can feel the summer vibes in Quinn Lewington's fun bass lines, and Paul Dally's emotionally-charged vocals.
Their four track EP has been playing on repeat in our house, and my personal favorite is the third track titled Bedlam Rose, I could listen to it for days. Favorite lyric from Bedlam rose is when Paul says "I told her, when I met her, it was easy, you just must believe me, jump now and I'll catch you, oh sweet darling', wherever you fall." It might be a far stretch but I keep picturing scenes from dirty dancing while I listen to this song, or at least iconic 1980s summer nights at the dance hall. But enough of my ramblings about the greatness of Jeane's "Hidden House EP", have a listen for yourself! Leave your responses in the comment section below! Thanks for the submission Dylan!

Justice - Helix.

The french electronic-duo, Justice, release the second track off of their upcoming Audio, Video, Disco  album due out October 25th. I really dig where they are going with this album, the hard & dirty disco is fresh. How cool do they look, too?

Justice - Helix

Skrillex - First Of The Year (Equinox).

Don't judge me for my love of bro-step, but oh man Skrillex finally made a video for his song Equinox which has the dirtiest drop of all time: "CALL 911 NOW!" Check it out if you love dubstep, if not, move right along.

Music Submission: Nishwasher.

Nishwasher, a Florida based indie pop rock band, dropped off their This Culture EP in the submission box and I am glad they did. There sounds reminds me a little of 1990s inspired stylings of the band Wavves, mixed with Smith Western style high pitch vocals. All around solid EP, with only room to get better with time. My favorite song from the EP would definitely be This Culutre, but all of them are fantastic. Thanks for the Submission Nishwasher!

Grouplove - Colours (Xaphoon Jones MEGA EDIT).

I don't know about the rest of you, but nothing gets me more excited than a solid remix of one of my favorite songs. So when Xaphoon Jones tweeted about his new mega edit of Grouplove's song Colours, I got very excited. After taking my initial listens, I was stoked on the changes that Xaphoon made. Have a listen, and you can download it from soundcloud!

BACK TO SCHOOL MIXTAPE!

Boy am I excited to finally tell you guys about this! This summer I was contacted by the lovely Alexa Mangrum, the new editor of the Arts & Entertainment section of the Point Weekly, she also writes amazing music reviews for different sites around San Diego. She contacted me to see if I was interested to make a back to school mixtape for the first Point Weekly Newspaper of the year! I mean come on, who wouldn't! So here we are, I am very excited to finally be able to share it with all of you.
On this Back To School Mixtape we've got 20 songs that ruled my Summer, that are still blasting through my speakers now in the Fall, and deserve some solid airtime in your Daddy's convertible that he gave you, maybe even playing in the PBC bathrooms, or at least plugged in to the speakerz at all your back to school gatherings! (whatever that means). But for real though, download the mixtape below and start listening, also click 'LIKE' on my facebook page to the left to keep track of all the other mixtapes and things going on around town! Cheers internet friends!

Sezio & San Diego Music Thing present Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr & Friends.

Last night I had the chance to head over to Sunset Temple in North Park to catch one of the San Diego Music Thing shows where Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr, Cuckoo Chaos, Rafter, and Jamuel Saxon put on some killer performances!

Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr put on an amazing show, with plenty of flashing lights, bubbles floating around the room, glow in the dark jackets, and more dancing than you would even know how to handle. It was my first time catching them live and I was amazed how all their songs came to life with extra passion and excitement!

We Almost Lost Detroit - Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. (Gil Scott-Heron cover)

Cuckoo Chaos had a more chill wave set where everyone just kinda relaxed and enjoyed the quartet vocals and funky guitars.

Cuckoo Chaos - Just Ride It

Rafter, oh man, Rafter. That is all I have to say after they blew my mind. They're sound live was kind of like Chromeo's rock 'n' roll step-brother. They we're definitely the surprise of the night for me, providing plenty of jaw dropping, dance inspiring, funky tunes that left me wanting so much more.

 Rafter - No F***ing Around

I had always heard that Jamuel Saxon was a band that you MUST see, and boy am I glad that I did. They were incredible. With their short and sweet electro songs, with really fun lyrics, the whole house was on their feet and dancing like mental patients.

All around amazing show guys! Thanks Sezio and San Diego Music Thing for providing us with a chance to get down and dirty with some of our favorites!

Star Slinger - Swimmhaus Johannesburg.

New remix done by Star Slinger for the track Swimmhaus Johannesburg by the band Fixers. Incredible as always.

Fixers - Swimmhaus Johannesburg (Star Slinger Remix) by Star Slinger

Das Racist - Michael Jackson.

Oh man this song/video is amazing! I am a huge Das Racist fan, and when I heard they were making a video for their song Michael Jackson, I thought to myself, oh no this is going to be insane, and I was right. These dudes are CRAZY! I recommend checking out all of their songs, because their lyrics are so clever, and they actually have very intelligent references delivered in a humorous way. Which is something that the rap game is missing at the moment.

Lana Del Rey - Blue Jeans.

New song by Lana Del Rey, the sultry Hollywood singer that we are all currently obsessing over, called Blue Jeans. Like all of her other songs, its a guaranteed old school sounding song about love affairs, heart break, and gangsters. Love is mean, Love hurts.

Oberhofer - Gotta Go.

I love this song by Oberhofer, called Gotta Go, and I just know you will love it as well! Have a listen!

Wavves - Nodding Off.

Yesterday Wavves released a new collaboration with Best Coast off of their upcoming Life Sux album available September 20th. Love it!

Justice - AUDIO, VIDEO, DISCO.

They're back!! They are so back. I mean, we can't forget about civilization, but this song, has the old repetitive disco vibes that I loved Justice for. I couldn't be more ecstatic that this duo is on the move. Welcome back boyz!

Kids & Explosions - The New Science.

Kids & Explosions have been a reliable source for very fun chopped up hip hop remixes, and today I stumbled upon this gem of theirs. I know it is not very new, but I just had to post it up because I've been playing it all day. So here you go, the video for their song, The New Science.

Monday, September 5, 2011

Theophilus London - I Stand Alone.

This is a fabulous green screen inspired music video for Theophilous London's song, I Stand Alone. The idea for the mostly green-screen video, according to Theophilus, came from the 1986 David Byrne film True Stories. In my opinion he is a style icon, for both music and fashion, the dude has swag, and is currently making very smart and creative decisions. Cheers mate!

Adrian Lux - Teenage Crime.

This song makes me so happy, it has the perfect amount of electronic vibes, but still holds a lot of emotion in the repetition of the powerful lines, "We don't sleep when the sun goes down, we don't waste no precious time. All my friends in the loop, making up for teenage crime." I honestly can't get enough of this track right now, it is one of three songs that are on replay for me right now. Check it out!

Skrillex - Rock 'n' Roll (Will Take You to the Mountain).

My ears, and mind, are completely blown. Since Identity Fest came to town on Friday, (sadly I wasn't in attendance to see Steve Aoki, Pretty Lights, and DatsiK) my love for dubstep has been reawakened. After seeing this video featuring Skrillex raging all over the world while playing his brain spasm inducing mixes, I realized that I officially LOVE dubstep, nothing else makes me want to dance more than these crazy songs!! C'mon lets be real, when Skrillex drops the beat in his song Equinox by someone screaming call 911 now,  you know it can't be beat. Enjoy!

Jeff Luker.

Recently commissioned for the Levi's Go Forth campaign, Jeff Luker's photographs capture moments of youthful adventure; as if pulled from the pages of a Kerouac novel, or just straight out of all my dreams. Inspiring work, that makes you want to shut your computer and go run free outside. On that note, I bid you adieu internet friendz.

The Cool Kids - Summer Jam feat. Maxine Ashley.

Now that summer break is officially over, it is necessary to start the reminiscing process. Lets begin by reviewing the new video for The Cool Kid's song, Summer Jam, which features the lovely Maxine Ashley. Two words: Pool Party.

Band Of Outsiders Autumn/Winter 2011 Lookbook.

This loobook is phenomenal, not just because of the rad clothes featured, but because the models are Tom Felton and Rupert Grint, two of our favorite wizardz from Harry Potter. The vintage inspired photos were taken at The Magic Castle in LA - a private clubhouse for the Academy of Magical Arts. It is funny to see them in MuGgLe clothes.

BBC Essential Mix with Jamie XX.

Jamie XX had the chance of taking over the turntables of BBC Radio 1 for a two hour mix of all his favorites. After sampling songs from Florence + The Machine, Adele, and Gil Scott-Heron, he has become one of the most respected DJs right now. If you've got a couple of hours to fill, put this mix on for you and your friends and just dance! It is full of some soulful tunes from a lot of great artists such as James Blake and Radiohead.
